Japan is crazy for Twitter. And Facebook? Hardly
Our old Industry Standard colleague Jackie Cohen astutely points this one out: In Japan, Twitter is on the verge of knocking off the incumbent Mixi as the country’s top social networking platform. Meanwhile, Facebook’s popularity there is stagnant at best.
Cohen, writing for AllFacebook, says Mixi is holding on to the top spot in Japan with 13.5 million unique visitors, just 300,000 more than Twitter. Facebook, meanwhile, is a distant Number 3 with 5.3 million visitors (we think she means “visitors”; not “users”). Here’s the chart showing growth in the past year, courtesy of comScore:
That users/visitors distinction we allude to above is an important metric to point out. It’s a good indication to measure registered users (the yard stick used to determine social network size), still it’s not the same thing.
Still, Twitter’s Japanese momentum hardly surprises us. We pointed out recently that Twitter, at this stage in its operating history, is actually larger than Facebook at the same point in its development.
