Facebook advertising revenue skyrockets as big brands join in
Facebook revenues could double to $1.4 billion in 2010 as more big brands bring advertising campaigns to the social network’s 500 million users. Without a doubt, Facebook advertising fees will continue to surge as more major brands set up camp. Could ad rates on Facebook, holding steady now, be heading up? If an IPO is in fact in the cards, it’s only a matter of time.
According to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, the biggest advertisers increased spending by as much as 20-fold in the past year. In an interview with Bloomberg she said: “Two years ago the big brands were experimenting with us. Now, they’re going big.”
Facebook is also improving its infrastructure to give more space and time to display advertisements and increasing user personal engagement with brands through social gaming and other features. “You can’t ignore the reach that’s there, but it’s also the true engagement that we have,” said Michael Donnelly, Coca-Cola’s director of global interactive marketing.
Facebook advertising campaigns have clearly increased in the past year. Just to name a few examples covered by SMI in the last month, Facebook marketing has been used to improve reach for online clothing retailers, revive Buick Motor’s youthful spirit, inspire the electric car market, boost revenue for Old Spice and increase pizza delivery orders at Dominos Pizza.
Things don’t look like they are slowing down, either. Facebook has 500 million users, but it has made it clear that its going to be diving head-first into the developing BRIC countries to double that number. If so, it could be on its way to being the biggest advertising platform in history.

One thought that I’ve had over the past week is how much of Twitter’s development and new features that they are adding to the website is adding to the ever more frequent “Fail Whale” that we (or atleast I) am seeing more and more?
I’d like to think that if Twitter are going to add this advertising feature as a major part of their platform that they will do something to decrease the amount of times a day that Twitter is “Over-Capacitated” – In the past four days I’m pretty sure that I’ve seen the “Fail Whale” on Twitter 3 times, once a day and I’m almost waiting for it to appear today.
If and when this new advertising platform is used more frequently by big brands across the World I can only hope that the increased weight doesn’t increase the down time of Twitter itself.
