The price of social shopping: the occasional privacy breach
A whopping 1.8 billion people have access to your most intimate details. That’s the finding of a creepy new study by Word Stream Internet Marketing that concludes anyone with a cheap laptop and a wifi connection can snoop around, check out your friends and hobbies, and even know when you’re away from home, thanks to the proliferation of social networks like Facebook, Foursquare, Gowalla and Twitter. Facebook, in particular, is the big culprit.WSIM recently published a nifty privacy info-graphic, which reveals a shocking truth about how quickly we’ve given our Facebook profiles to everyone on the internet. In just five years we’ve opened up everything we publish – not just to potential friends, but to companies and governments.
So what do we get out of it? Streamlined social-shopping capabilities and external sharing functions. It’s now simple to connect Facebook accounts with interests and hobbies to share with friends. In essence, less privacy means people and businesses will have a world of opportunities to connect and share based on who is clicking the “Like” button.
Of course, anyone can opt out – kind of. Among all the privacy controversy surrounding Facebook, we must always remember the simple truth – if you don’t want people to know about it, don’t post it on your profile.
