The Guardian’s secret to building the killer app

Submitted by Social Media Influence on July 19, 2010 – 9:12 am6 Comments

Can the publishing industry be saved by the apps revolution? Will it be in the form of subscriptions or heavy-trafficked free apps? Bernhard Warner, editor of SMI, had a chance to speak to put these questions to Jonathon Moore, Mobile Product Manager for the Guardian, in a one-on-one interview at Social Media Influence conference 2010. He’s certainly well equipped to answer this question. The Guardian newspaper mobile application department is “raising the bar” in the mobile app market with outstanding early results – 150,000 app downloads and first place in the EU.

Moore highlighted The Guardian’s steadfast dedication to openness by emphasizing the open platform on which their application is built. He says they are encouraging third-party developers to expand using the platform and that they enhance the Guardian mobile experience by offering these developers new and “interesting” revenue opportunities.

Will mobile save the newspaper business? “We are a long way from a silver bullet,” he says, “but as we really start to leverage these amazing new devices, we can start to rebuild confidence.” Hear more right here:
