Move over Lady Gaga, Starbucks first brand to 10 million fans

Like the coffee fiends we are, we are anxiously pressing the refresh button on the Starbucks Facebook page as the coffee maker nears an unprecedented milestone for a consumer brand: the first to 10 million fans.

At the time of this post the Starbucks Facebook page was about 10,000 fans shy, clocking in with 9,989,692 fans this afternoon. At the rate it’s going (over 3,000 fans added each hour at the moment) it’s highly likely Starbucks will crack the eight-figure mark in the next few hours, according to the social media measurement website Famecount. And, since the last time we looked in early June, Starbucks has grown by a whopping 2.5 million.

Sure, Lady Gaga pulled off the feat first (earlier this month), but Starbucks is close behind. How did it do it? Perhaps the free wi-fi in Starbucks locations did the trick in building fan loyalty is one reason. But check out how much the Starbucks Facebook fan base grew during the World Cup, too, coinciding with the decision to expand into the South African market:
