Twitter helps Toy Story 3 set record opening weekend

Submitted by Social Media Influence on June 21, 2010 – 1:22 pm8 Comments

Twitter sure picked the right partner in Disney-Pixar with which to debut its new “sponsored trends” advertising platform. Toy Story 3 appears to have blown away even the rosiest of forecasts, pulling in an estimated $158 million global box office take this weekend, Variety reports, a record for Disney-Pixar. This figure will no doubt add to the debate of whether Twitter’s new ad platform has the power to build instant buzz (and sales) for a brand, or whether it’s just a nice-to-have add-on to an existing ad campaign.

To be sure, Toy Story 3 was long expected to take the box office top spot this weekend, but it completely blew away the field. Karate Kid, in its second week, drew $29 million for second place on the U.S. charts.

The buzz around Toy Story 3 has been building for some time, cresting last week in the days before its debut. (It was again trending this morning among UK search terms.) Disney-Pixar amplified the Twitter buzz when it sponsored the trending chatter, ensuring that the studio’s nudge-nudge tweets about the movie appeared atop the search results.

Sure, Twitter picked a cannot-lose ad partner in Disney-Pixar with which to demonstrate the possibilities of the ad platform. But the skeptic in us wants to see more before we’re convinced.

What will you do for an encore, Twitter?
