Nike World Cup video goes viral. Take that, sponsors!
Next month’s World Cup has long been hyped as the first “Social Media World Cup,” a moniker that doesn’t quite fit. One sponsor, Yahoo, this week outlined its World Cup plans, replete with fantasy games and real-time scoring, but remarkably little compelling social media features. Another sponsor, McDonald’s, put together a cheesy Roger Milla goal-celebration video that’s not really impressing the YouTube soccer crazies. Where then to turn for cool World Cup content to get you in the mood? You have to turn to a non-sponsor, Nike. It posted this week a 3-minute “Write the Future” video starring Wayne Rooney, Kobe Bryant, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and, doh!, Homer Simpson.
In the first three days, it’s racked up over 400,000 views and hundreds of appreciative comments. As one YouTuber posts, “NIKE WINS.” So far, we’d have to agree.
