Start-up uses social media to rate the big brands

Which airline – British Airways, Easyjet or Virgin Atlantic – gets the highest marks from customers? What about Vodafone vs. T-Mobile? A new customer rating service, Pownum,  has launched that tries to remove a bit of the mystery about which companies are the best do do business with.

To be sure, online customer ratings services have been with us for some time. ReviewCentre and epinions are two of the better known ones in Britain and in the U.S. The strength of such services lies in its network. The more people who express an opinion the more solid the rating. Pownum too sees this, hence the name. It’s short for “power in numbers.” While Pownum has fewer reviews than its better known rivals, it does have some neat features like the ability to share via Facebook, Twitter or Google Buzz a particular rating. You can also give the opinion the thumbs up or thumbs down. It also pulls in Twitter and blog posts that mention the brand.

Another cool feature is ranking companies against their direct rivals, as we did here with BA vs. Virgin Atlantic vs. Easyjet.

Disagree? Head to Pownum and let them know what you think.
