Twitter’s Like-killer is @Nowhere
It’s been over a week since the release of both Twitter’s @Anywhere and Facebook’s “Like” button. Both promised to change the way people interact with one another and with the issues and brands they feel most strongly about. But only one appears to be living up to the hype.
Yep, it’s Facebook, though not nearly to the levels founder Mark Zuckerburg predicted a week ago when he said there would be 1 billion Like buttons around the web in 24 hours. Well, it turned out to be only 50K. Facebook then came back to clarify that Zuckerburg actually meant 1 billion “Like” impressions. Never mind.
Out of the 50K sites that have integrated the button, many of them are high traffic news sites like The New York Times and The Huffington Post. Just check out any of their stories and there are already several hundred Likes. (We’ve embedded it pretty quickly on this site, too. Hint, hint.) CNN even made sure to tell everyone about their Facebook integration with a Times Square ad posted to Twitpic by Facebook’s Randi Zuckerberg who describes her title as “the unofficial Facebook correspondent for CNN.”
Meanwhile, does anyone remember @Anywhere? We did a story on Twitter’s answer to “Like” a week ago asking if it was anywhere to be found. There has still been no updates of prominent sites integrating the feature on the media.twitter.com press page, as Twitter had promised. Not a good sign.
Out of the major @Anywhere “launch” sites only a few seem to have adapted into the site architecture. Citysearch has a version of it, but it is unclear if it’s actively being used by visitors to the site. The Huffington Post may be the most active. This is a screen shot from its “Twitter Edition” site:
What we did notice was that the @Anywhere trial members had one thing in common: a Facebook Like button.
We asked a few days ago if Likes were going to become the new Tweet. If things keep up like this Twitter may find itself without many friends where it counts.
