Will “Likes” replace Tweets as the new conversation-starter?

Submitted by Brian Skepys on April 26, 2010 – 9:12 am4 Comments

It’s been less than a week since Facebook’s F8 conference and the buzz continues over “Like” as independent developers have already created sites that allow you to super track all of your friends’ Like activity. The privacy grumbles aside, is it cool to know what all your friends are up to all the time, or is it bordering on creepy? And, more importantly, will Facebook use “Like” to knock Twitter off its perch as the dominant mouthpiece for real-time discussion?

Likebutton.me is one interesting new site that’s become a hub for Facebook Like-monitoring (as long as  you know these people). Divided into subject categories, you can see who likes what, when, and who else likes it after that.

Likebutton describes the site as:

“Like Button is a collection of links shared by your friends from most popular sites. For you privacy concerned people: don’t worry, like button has no access to your personal information. Think of each box as a very specific miniature Facebook page inside of this site.”

Indeed, it looks more like your Twitter homepage than anything else. Just replace tweets with Likes.

But do I want to know that my coworker or friend “Likes” those pair of Assless Leather Chaps, which would eventually reveal his liking of the Assless Chaps Facebook fan page? Perhaps… perhaps not. What are YOU into anyway? We’ll soon find out, no doubt.

The big innovation of Like in the past week is that it’s become just as easy to broadcast your personal tastes as you would your tweets. But Facebook Like is a bit more personal than the Twitter Tweet. There’s a hint of preference over simple interest.

That may have some interesting business implications, especially now that online job recruiters are tapping into Facebook making your Facebook page part of the hiring process as Simply Hired shows here:

As far as the fuss about privacy, we must return to the prescient advice: “If you don’t want people to know about it, don’t post it”. In the meantime though, it’s pretty interesting to see the collective tastes of your network.
