Milennials big on blogs, but are flat broke

Submitted by Bernhard Warner on April 26, 2010 – 3:04 pm5 Comments

This is the conclusion we can draw from two separate in-depth looks at Millennials, those teens and twenty-somethings that are coming of age amid a period of incredible innovation and incredible economic uncertainty.

First, the good news. New research by Blog Her and iVillage, shows Millennials are indisputably the most blog-savvy generation. They write more blog posts than anyone and are second to Generation X/Y (the researchers lumped the two together) in terms of reading others’ blog posts. Here’s how eMarketer illustrates it:

And now to the not-so-promising. Michael Snyder, editor of the alarmist, but entertaining, blog The Economic Collapse, publishes a piece about “the brokest generation ever,” Millennials.  They are deep in personal debt, unlikely to have healthcare coverage and have little savings to speak of. Snyder observes, “we are raising a generation of young Americans that are a financial mess.”

Maybe so, but as the initial study shows, Millennials are more likely to show their creative side than older generations and are more willing to support their fellow creative brethren as well. Such creativity should serve them well, no doubt.
