If Twitter were a cocktail party
…it would be a pretty dull one. That’s the observation we draw from the latest updated Twitter infographic, courtesy of Gerardo Obieta, a graphic designer in Minneapolis. Obieta points out that for every 100 Tweets, just eight are “good,” or re-tweet worthy. The vast majority is still made up of spam, inane observations, self-promotion and nonsense.
Here’s what Twitter conversation looks like most days:

But don’t discount Twitter’s place in setting the public discussion agenda each day. A full 38 out of 100 Tweets are considered conversational, showing there is vibrant communication happening, and, as the Financial Times points out, 19 billion search queries are performed on Twitter each month, making it an increasingly important destination for consumers to research products, brands and, of course, opinions about products and brands.

I guess these numbers don’t surprise me too much, because the unfortunate reality is that if anyone can say anything, a lot of the stuff won’t be worth hearing. I liked the post though.
Yet more evidence (as if we needed it) that Twitter needs industrial-strength filters. Thanks for the comment, Steve.
