A new study by the Interactive Advertising Bureau in shows that Europeans from Portugal to Poland have been steadily embracing social media. Of all internet users surveyed in 16 countries, 52%  had updated or viewed a profile on a social network in the last month. Surprisingly, Hungary came on top with 65% participation, followed by Romania at 61% and Poland at 56%.

Absent from the IAB survey (done in cooperation with Marketers Consumers, Digital and Connected) were Russia and the former Soviet Republics. However, a 2009 study by comScore found Russia had the most socially networked population, with visitors spending 6.6 hours and viewing 1,307 pages per visitor per month. In Russia the biggest social network is Vkontakte, with more than 63 million users.

The comScore study reflects that social media has had a huge impact impact in three of the largest countries in terms of area: Russia, Brazil and Canada.

It seems no matter where you look social networking is catching on.
