Social networks outlawed at work

Submitted by matthew yeomans on September 8, 2008 – 2:14 pmOne Comment

This press release just came through my in-box: according to a new study by mobile operator 3, British firms are far more restrictive when it comes to social media usage on the job. UK employers ban access to Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and the like in the workplace with far more regularity than their counterparts in France, Spain, Germany and Italy. The numbers break down like this:

35 per cent of UK firms have official restricitons on accessing social network sites. By comparison, just 19 per cent of firms in Spain ban them; Germany and France are next at 17% and Italy comes in at 16%.

This was always going to happen. I have questioned on some forum the use of widgets and presence on social networks that are not owned or controlled by said organisations.
Whereas corporate social networks allows for legitimate business connectivity and engagement between employees on the one hand and their customers or clients. It of course requires proper policies, understanding, scope, purpose, etc.
This is currently being used by some FMCGs and business advisory services to good effect
