BBC iPlayer points to growing online viewing shift

Submitted by matthew yeomans on February 22, 2008 – 3:29 pmNo Comment

Media nugget of the week. If you wanted any further education of the way we are consuming media, and of the way online video is flexing its muscles, take a look at these stats about the BBC iPlayer from the Financial Times:

- 17m programmes have been downloaded or streamed on demand over the BBC’s iPlayer since it launched just seven weeks ago.

- 500,000 programmes are now being viewed over the online video site each day.

- More than 2.2m people used the software in January.

"The iPlayer’s popularity had boosted traffic to bbc.co.uk, the
broadcaster’s main website, which it expects to overtake MSN to become
the second most popular site in the UK after Google," the FT reports.
